The
family of Johannes Bachman, a Swiss Mennonite, settled in what was Conestoga
Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, in the early 1700's. It is believed
they came from the Canton of Thurgau, Switzerland about 1711. They were "ebonistes",
or woodworkers.
In 1769, Johannes Bachman began a cabinet-making business
at McCartney's Corner, near what is now the town of West Willow, in Pequea
(peck' way) Township. He made necessary items of wood
for the home, furniture, doors and windows. His ledger, translated
from German, also includes the making of Coffins and often,
the cause of death.
His grandson, Jacob Bachman, moved to East Lampeter Township
and set up a cabinetmaking shop along today's Bachmantown Road. In 1855, Christian
Bachman, moved the business to the center square in Strasburg. By 1917, inexpensive
factory-made furniture forced the closure of the Bachman furniture shops.
The funeral home moved to the present location on South Decatur Street about
1933.
